How to Pack for Ten Days in a Carry-On Only

If you’ve ever stared at your suitcase wondering how to fit everything for a 10-day trip, you’re not alone. Between shoes, outfits, and toiletries, it can feel impossible — but trust me, it isn’t.

After nearly three decades of traveling (and dozens of international flights later), I’ve learned the art of packing light without sacrificing style or comfort. Here’s how to make it work — and why your next trip might just feel better with less luggage.

    1. Start with the Right Carry-On

Not all carry-ons are created equal. Look for one that’s lightweight, expands slightly, and has smooth-rolling wheels. My personal favorite? One with compression panels and built-in organization — it makes all the difference.

If you’re traveling abroad, double-check your airline’s size limits — international carriers often have stricter dimensions than U.S. airlines.

    2. Build a Capsule Wardrobe

The secret to carry-on packing is versatility. Choose mix-and-match pieces that can be dressed up or down.

    • Stick to neutral colors like black, beige, navy, and white.
    • Add one or two statement pieces or accessories for variety.
    • Plan for layers — lightweight sweaters, a cardigan, and a scarf work wonders across climates.

Christie’s Tip: “If everything in your bag coordinates, you’ll have a week’s worth of outfits from just a few items.”

    3. Rethink Your Shoes

Limit yourself to two pairs of shoes — three max.
Pack one comfortable walking shoe, one dressier option (wedges or loafers), and wear your bulkiest pair on the plane.

Pack shoes in cloth bags to save space and keep your clothes clean.

    4. Use Packing Cubes (They’re a Game-Changer)

Packing cubes help keep your suitcase organized and compact.

    • Roll your clothes to save space and minimize wrinkles.
    • Separate items by category — tops in one cube, bottoms in another, and so on.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can fit (and how easy it is to repack mid-trip).

    5. Downsize Toiletries and Makeup

    For a 10-day trip, you don’t need full-size anything.

    • Use refillable travel bottles for shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.
    • Keep makeup minimal — tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a travel-size palette go a long way.
    • Don’t forget a solid bar or stick version of products when possible — no leaks, no liquid limits.

    6. Laundry Is Your Friend

If you’re traveling longer than a week, plan to do a quick mid-trip laundry.
Most hotels and resorts (especially the ones I book for clients) offer same-day service or easy access to laundry facilities.
Even rinsing a few items in the sink keeps your wardrobe fresh without extra bulk.

    7. Keep the “Just in Case” Items in Check

One of the biggest packing mistakes is over-preparing.
    Instead, think of multi-use items:

    • A sarong can be a beach wrap, shawl, or picnic blanket.
    • A light rain jacket doubles as a windbreaker.
    • Neutral shoes can match both casual and dressy outfits.

If you haven’t used an item on your last two trips, you probably won’t need it this time.

    8. Travel Smart, Travel Confident

With the right strategy, you’ll breeze through airports, skip baggage fees, and never worry about lost luggage again.

“I always remind my clients — packing light isn’t about going without. It’s about creating freedom to enjoy your trip without stress. You can look chic, feel comfortable, and still travel effortlessly with just a carry-on.” — Christie, Christie’s Caribbean Travel
