There is an art to packing the perfect personal item. When you are jetting off to the Caribbean, you want your journey to be as relaxing as the destination itself.
Over years of travel, I have refined my “under-the-seat” bag strategy to ensure I have everything I need—comfort, safety, and a touch of luxury—right at my fingertips. Whether you are a solo female traveler or heading out on a family getaway, here is exactly what I pack to stay organized and stress-free at 30,000 feet.
1. Start with the Right Bag
My absolute go-to is the Large Longchamp Le Pliage, paired with an internal organizer. I recommend this bag to almost all my clients for a few reasons:
- Portability: It folds up into a tiny square, meaning you can easily pack a second one as a spare.
- Versatility: It fits perfectly on top of a roller suitcase, but once you arrive at your resort, it transforms into a chic, waterproof beach bag.
- Hygiene: It is zippered (essential for security) and fully machine washable.

2. The Secret: The Bag Organizer
The real magic happens inside. I use a felt organizer insert to give the bag structure and keep my essentials from becoming a jumbled mess. Once I reach my destination, I can easily take the organizer out and—voilà!—I have a shopping tote ready for the local markets.

3. The “Peace of Mind” Document Folder
Technology is great, but I always travel with a clear plastic folder containing hard copies of the essentials:
- The Itinerary: Flight and hotel details with phone numbers and anything other travel planning services documents.
- Insurance: A hard copy of your travel insurance policy.
- ID Copies: A color copy of my passport and credit cards (front and back).
Christie’s Tip: “I always lock my original passport in the hotel safe and carry the paper copy with me unless the original is strictly required. It’s a simple safety step that gives me total peace of mind.”
4. In-Flight Nourishment
Airplane food is rarely something to write home about. I use a small 3×5″ zippered canvas bag to pack mess-free snacks that keep me fueled.
- Protein: Justin’s travel-size peanut butter and turkey pepperoni sticks.
- Hydration: A refillable water bottle and electrolyte packs (like Emergen-C) to combat airplane dehydration.
- Sweet Treats: Graham crackers and Tootsie Rolls.
5. The “Travel Survival Kit”
This is my secret weapon. In a zippered pouch smaller than the palm of your hand, I keep the tiny essentials that save the day.
- Health: Ibuprofen, Benadryl, and Acetaminophen.
- Hygiene: Deodorant wipes, shout wipes for spills, and a tiny nail file.
- Beauty: A face spritzer (for a mid-flight refresh) and a tiny hairspray.
- Repairs: A miniature sewing kit.

6. Comfort & Tech
Finally, to ensure the flight flies by:
- Tech: An iPad or Kindle, wireless headphones, and a portable charger are non-negotiable.
- Comfort: A pashmina wrap (airplanes are always cold!).
- Wallet: A slim wallet with cash, two credit cards, and my health insurance card.

7. Travel Smart, Travel Confident
Believe it or not, this all fits comfortably into the bag without weighing a ton. You are left with a perfectly organized system that slides right under the seat in front of you.
“Packing smart isn’t just about saving space—it’s about starting your luxury vacation the moment you step on the plane.” — Christie
